Old buildings do not have standard openings
The thing that catches people out in Ogden is that almost nothing is a catalog size. A commercial frontage on a historic block has been altered, patched and re-glazed by several generations before us, and a house from the twenties has settled in every direction. Measuring off a drawing or a previous invoice is how you end up with a piece of glass that does not fit and cannot be returned.
So everything here gets templated on site. It takes an extra visit and it is the reason the job is right.
The other Ogden feature is single pane glass, still in service, in a climate that gets properly cold. Replacing it in the existing frame is usually possible and is far cheaper than replacing the window. Where the frame itself has finally gone, we will say so rather than sell you glass to put into it.
Downtown, the work is frontages, entrance doors and the board-up call that sometimes comes first. Commercial glass on an old building has its own quirks, particularly around what the opening will actually take.

Where can I get window glass replaced in Ogden?

Can glass be replaced in an old window without replacing the window?
Usually yes, and on Ogden's older housing stock that is normally the better answer. The glass comes out of the existing frame and a new unit goes back in, so the original window stays. The limit is a frame that has rotted or racked far enough that a new unit will not seal, which we will tell you at the measure.
Will a modern insulated unit fit an old window opening?
Not always, and it is worth knowing before you order. Older frames were built for thin single pane glass, so the rebate is often too shallow to take a modern insulated unit. Sometimes the frame can be adapted, sometimes a thinner double glazed unit works, and sometimes single pane is genuinely the right call. We check the rebate depth when we measure.
Do historic district rules affect replacement glass?
They can, and on a downtown commercial frontage they often do. Rules typically govern the appearance of the frontage rather than the glass itself, so like for like replacement is usually straightforward while changing the look is not. Check with the city before ordering, and we will match the existing frontage where that is what is required.
