Century-old houses, modern glass

Ogden has the oldest housing we work in, and bathrooms in houses from the twenties and thirties were not built to any dimension you will find in a catalog. They have also usually been remodelled at least twice, which means the current opening is a compromise between the original plan and whatever the last person did.

The practical result is that we template every one of these. Not measure, template. There is a real difference: measuring records three numbers, templating records the actual shape including the lean and the out-of-plumb.

The other thing that comes up in Ogden more than anywhere else is what the wall will hold. A frameless enclosure puts real load into the wall through the hinges, and lath and plaster over century-old studs is not the same substrate as modern backer board. We check that before we quote instead of discovering it with a drill.

How we handle it here

Templated, not measured

We record the shape of the opening including the lean, because in a house this old three numbers will not describe it.

We check what the wall will take

Frameless hinges load the wall hard. Old lath and plaster is not modern backer board, and that is better found at the quote.

Remodel-friendly

Most Ogden bathrooms have been altered before. We work with the opening that is there now rather than the one on any drawing.

Shower doors in Ogden: questions

Where can I get a frameless shower door installed in Ogden?
We install shower enclosures across Ogden, including in the older housing stock downtown. Call (801) 678-5770, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm. The glass is templated to your finished tile and made to order, so expect one to two weeks from template to install.
Can a bathroom in a 1920s house take a frameless shower enclosure?
Usually yes. Century old bathrooms are rarely square and the walls are often lath and plaster, which matters because frameless hinges carry real load and need something solid behind them. We check what the wall is made of at the template and specify blocking or a different hinge position where the plaster will not hold.
Does a previous bathroom remodel make new shower glass harder to fit?
It can, and it is worth mentioning up front. Earlier work often leaves fixings, patched substrate or a curb that is no longer level, and frameless glass shows every one of those. We template off what is there now rather than what should be there, and tell you where the glass will sit proud of a wall that has moved.
