Old bathrooms, tight stairwells

Salt Lake City has a lot of housing that predates the second world war, and a pre-war bathroom is almost never square. Walls lean, floors slope toward a drain that was set by eye, and the tile that went on last year did nothing to change any of that. A frameless panel has no frame to hide a discrepancy in, so on these houses the template matters more than anywhere else we work.

The second Salt Lake City problem is getting the glass to the bathroom. Narrow stairs, tight landings and a turn at the top are normal in the older neighborhoods, and a large tempered panel does not bend. We check the route in at the same visit we template, because finding out on install day that a panel will not go up the stairs is a wasted piece of glass, not just a wasted morning.

Downtown condos are the same problem with a lift and a building manager attached. Tell us the building and we will find out the access rules before we order.

How we handle it here

Out-of-square openings

Templated on site, never measured off the tile plan. Older houses have settled and the opening is rarely the shape anyone expects.

Access checked before we order

Stairs, landings and turns get measured too. A panel that cannot reach the bathroom is a panel nobody can use.

Condo buildings

Lift access, loading times and building rules sorted before the glass is cut, not on the morning of the install.

Shower doors in Salt Lake City: questions

How much does a frameless shower door cost in Salt Lake City?
Frameless enclosures are quoted per bathroom because each one is templated to the opening. Panel size, glass thickness, hardware finish and how far out of square the walls are all move the number. We template on site and quote in writing before anything is ordered.
Can a frameless shower be fitted where nothing in the bathroom is square?
Yes, and in older Salt Lake homes it is the normal case rather than the exception. Frameless glass is cut to the opening you actually have, not to a nominal size, so the out of square is measured and built into the panel. What it does mean is that the template has to be right, because tempered glass cannot be trimmed on site.
How is a large glass panel got up the stairs in an older home?
That is checked at the template, not on install day. Half inch glass in a big panel is heavy and rigid, and a tight landing or a turn in the stairs can rule out a single panel entirely. Where the route will not take it, the answer is a matched two panel layout rather than a smaller shower.
